Physical Therapy

At Arizona Pain & Posture, our physical therapy looks different from what a patient may have experienced in the past. We will never pressure a patient to “push through the pain” or perform any movement that is uncomfortable. We pride ourselves on achieving outstanding levels of improvement with patients without these all-too-common, outdated, painful techniques.

Our head physical therapist is a Feldenkrais practitioner. If you haven’t heard of Feldenkrais, it is manual therapy paired with verbally directed movement explorations based on developmental movements, ordinary functional activities, or abstract explorations of joint, muscular, and postural relationships. The easy movements gradually evolve into greater range and complexity. Emphasis is placed on NOT moving into discomfort, and afterward, participants report feeling lighter and taller, with free and easy movement.

The Feldenkrais Method is excellent for any situation that calls for physical therapy, whether it’s acute pain, chronic pain, pre-operative, post-operative, or any other type of pain or limitations.

We are able to accept insurance for Feldenkrais sessions, through our dual-licensed physical therapist Jeanne Hills, the only physical therapist in Arizona who also holds a 4-year Feldenkrais degree.

Using the Feldenkrais Method®, Jeanne Hills, PT, GCFP, specializes in helping chronic and complicated pain patients reach their full potential and reclaim control over their lives through the freedom and ease of movement most of us knew as children.

The technique repairs connections between the motor cortex and the body by retraining movement patterns. The method is based on the principles of neurology, physics, and physiology. Feldenkrais® eliminates the bad habits in movement that often create pain, replacing them with new, good habits.

The Feldenkrais® Method is a gentle and effective technique created by European scientist and martial artist Moshe Feldenkrais in the 1950s after a repetitive knee injury left him facing surgery.

Instead, he developed an incredible high-end technique used today by everyone from professional athletes and dancers to regular folks with good old-fashioned neck and back pain. In fact, it can help with every type of physical pain you can imagine.

Therapeutic Massage

What’s the difference between a spa massage and a therapeutic massage?

While a spa massage feels good and has benefits, a therapeutic massage offers much more. The main difference is the focus — a typical massage therapist is thinking mainly about muscles and their goal is to knead out the knots in the muscles. With a standard therapeutic massage, therapists are often focused on the fascia, which is the connective tissue that runs throughout the muscles. Breaking up tight fascia can definitely help relieve pain and improve posture. We take it a step further. We train our massage therapists to do both of those things, but also to align the nerve lines that travel throughout the body. They are taught to avoid heavy work on areas that have many nerve lines converging, and they are taught how to manipulate those areas to free up the “caught” nerves.

Nerves are what register pain in the brain. Nerve lines run from the brain down the spine and out to the extremities. Anywhere along these complex paths, there can be tight muscles, tight fascia, or an injury that is causing the nerve to register pain. We focus on manipulating nerves — not just along the spine and neck, but throughout the entire body.

Our massage practitioners use our technique called RegenAlign: The Bonacci Method of Regenerative Alignment™, a recent advancement in the fields of manual therapy, massage, and pain management. It is a cost-effective solution for acute, chronic, and complex pain that improves posture while decreasing pain.

The gentle technique is extremely effective for unusual or difficult-to-diagnose pain situations. There is no expensive initial visit — all visits are the same price. Patients can pay cash in affordable 15-minute increments, as needed for pain.

Dr. Bonacci practices the same technique and takes months to train the massage therapists one-on-one until they master the protocol. There is always the option to see Dr. Bonacci, who is available for guidance on urgent or unresponsive pain. Patients are always offered a free consultation with Dr. Bonacci, along with exercises and home-care guidance to keep the pain away.

Clothed massage allows therapists to read posture accurately during their assessment by the drape of their garments. Additionally, clothed massage provides a professional comfort level for patients. The sessions are affordable, safe, and effective with no commitment.

Feldenkrais

The Feldenkrais Method® is an innovative way of learning to move again — focusing on simple, gentle and pain-free “movement explorations.”

At our office, Jeanne Hills, licensed physical therapist, teaches the gentle Feldenkrais® movements, which are then practiced by the patient at home. As the brain and nervous system are trained to move properly, new muscle memory is created, posture is improved, and pain disappears.

Jeanne is the only physical therapist in the Valley that has completed the 4-year degree to become a Guild-Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and uses Functional Integration® with every physical therapy patient.

Jeanne’s motto is, “Don’t move into more pain!” Physical Therapy has a general reputation as being painful — not at our office. Jeanne takes a meditative approach, allowing muscle tension to release and movement to increase gradually. The movements should be slow and easy, staying within the patient’s pain constraints.

TMJ Treatment

Headaches come in all shapes and sizes and have a variety of causes. Often, nerves are involved and the realignment and relaxation of the nerves through manual soft tissue work can alleviate the headache. The nerves throughout the entire body can affect headaches. There are many ways to relieve pressure on nerves. We use RegenAlign: The Bonacci Method of Regenerative Alignment™.

With RegenAlign™, a variety of assessments and manual techniques are utilized to free compromised nerves by aligning the muscles, connective tissue, nerves, and joints. Most patients will need 4-12 sessions for enduring stability. The RegenAlign™ posture assessment and technique was developed during 20 years of treating severe, acute, and chronic, complicated pain and injury conditions. Many of these conditions were unresponsive to prior medical or alternative treatment, yet we found success by creatively combining various manual techniques. By aligning all the structural parts of the body — muscles, fascia, joints, and nerves — the body is able to regain motion and improve function, and pain subsides.

Dr. Bonacci says, “In scientific theory, and in my personal beliefs, we are not meant to live in pain. Our bodies are made to heal. We are healing machines. Given the right atmosphere, we can heal more extraordinarily than most of us believe or have experienced. In many cases, we hear stories of people in dire circumstances having healing experiences and see it as miraculous. Our bodies are a miracle — given a healing environment internally, they can regenerate. I help provide that environment by removing blockages in muscles, soft tissue, and joints, allowing the nerves to flow properly again and the body to move properly again. Movement is life. Movement is healing.”

Auto Injury

Dr. Bonacci has spent the last 20 years doing research on how to most efficiently treat injury and pain patients. Many of these cases start with unresolved issues relating to an auto accident.

If you have recently been injured in an auto accident, the Bonacci Method can quickly and effectively realign your damaged muscles, soft tissue, joints, and nerves, in order to heal properly during your body’s initial rapid healing phase.

If you were injured in the past in an auto accident and your body never healed properly, resulting in chronic pain, the Bonacci Method can help re-train your body into proper posture and alignment, allowing the correct healing to take place. It’s never too late to get the body back on track and begin the path to a pain-free life.

Patients who have not responded well to their initial, sometimes multiple, physical therapy, medical or chiropractic treatments are often later referred to Dr. Bonacci by medical doctors, physiatrists, and other pain management specialists. We get excellent results using the Bonacci Method; our in-depth assessment and multidisciplinary treatment incorporate various therapies and exercise modalities. We target the whole body, realigning the posture to enable an environment for healing to take place.

Auto and personal injuries are always complicated. Dr. Bonacci works one-on-one with his patients to give them the tools they need to understand all the alternative and medical treatment options. He has confidently co-managed multiple cases with prominent holistic and medical doctors to reach the desired outcome. With this type of personalized attention to treatment, patients are given their best chances for success.

Dr. Bonacci likes to follow a simple philosophy when developing a treatment plan: Treatment should move from most organic and least invasive, to less organic and more invasive. In other words, try everything possible to heal properly and naturally from the beginning, and only choose invasive procedures as a last resort. This way the patient is empowered and can mentally move forward with confidence, rather than jumping ahead and having to try to go backward.

After all avenues of treatment have been taken, there is still a large responsibility left for the patient. In most cases, patients who are successful with treatment have also made changes in their lives to maintain their wellness. The number one preventive step is to eat well and exercise.

In a recent cover story in Time magazine titled, “The Exercise Cure,” researchers discuss how exercise is a cure for almost every ailment. Simply put, exercise regenerates all the cells in the body, which essentially cures minor ailments before they become larger ones. It also prevents premature aging and cancer.

Most pain patients will attest that their pain goes away when they exercise, therefore a large part of the Bonacci Method is exercise. As the patient heals, the routine can increase gradually. Dr. Bonacci provides a custom-tailored, detailed exercise regimen for every patient.
